The narrative around Calgary’s tech sector has shifted from "emerging" to "accelerating." Today, we are proud to share that the 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER)—the world’s most comprehensive analysis of startup activity—has officially launched at VivaTech in Paris.

This year’s findings confirm what those of us on the ground have been seeing and feeling: Calgary is currently one of the most dynamic innovation hubs in the world.

The report highlights a significant milestone for our city, ranking Calgary as a #41-50 Emerging Ecosystem, marking a climb of 52 spots since 2020. Perhaps most importantly, the data reveals that our ecosystem is growing at four times the rate of other Canadian markets.

Calgary Tech is Growing Faster Than Any Market in Canada

Startup Genome with Platform Calgary, Calgary Innovation Coalition, and Calgary Economic Development unveil the world's most comprehensive report on startup ecosystems, the 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Report, at VivaTech Paris. 

Calgary (AB) — June 17, 2026 — The 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network launched today at Vivatech Paris. This year's #GSER2026 puts a spotlight on the tremendous growth seen by Calgary’s tech ecosystem:

• Ranking as the #41-50 Emerging Ecosystem, rising 52 spots since 2020.
• The Calgary ecosystem created $7 billion in economic value from July 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025. Comparative peer ecosystems include: Porto, Portugal ($8.4B); Cairo, Egypt ($3B); Detroit ($14.5B); Ottawa ($2.5B); Brisbane, Australia ($6.3B); and Nairobi, Kenya ($4.2B)
• Top 10 North America Ecosystem in Affordable Talent — reinforcing Calgary’s position as one of the fastest growing tech talent markets in North America.
• Calgary’s ecosystem has grown at four-times the rate of other Canadian markets since 2021 - 40% annual growth in Calgary, compared to the Canadian average at 9.6%.
