More about Platform Calgary
The narrative around Calgary’s tech sector has shifted from "emerging" to "accelerating." Today, we are proud to share that the 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER)—the world’s most comprehensive analysis of startup activity—has officially launched at VivaTech in Paris.
This year’s findings confirm what those of us on the ground have been seeing and feeling: Calgary is currently one of the most dynamic innovation hubs in the world.
The report highlights a significant milestone for our city, ranking Calgary as a #41-50 Emerging Ecosystem, marking a climb of 52 spots since 2020. Perhaps most importantly, the data reveals that our ecosystem is growing at four times the rate of other Canadian markets.
We invite you to read the full details in the press release below. It offers a transparent look at the economic value we are creating together, the sectors driving our momentum—such as Cleantech, Fintech, and Agtech—and the collaborative spirit that sets Calgary apart from other global hubs.
Startup Genome with Platform Calgary, Calgary Innovation Coalition, and Calgary Economic Development unveil the world's most comprehensive report on startup ecosystems, the 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Report, at VivaTech Paris.
Calgary (AB) — June 17, 2026 — The 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) by Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network launched today at Vivatech Paris. This year's #GSER2026 puts a spotlight on the tremendous growth seen by Calgary’s tech ecosystem:

Calgary’s emergence as a globally recognized tech ecosystem has been used as a case study by Startup Genome to showcase how emerging markets can build strong startup pipelines and drive local economic growth.
“Calgary isn’t trying to be the next Silicon Valley. We are building something unique: a deeply collaborative ecosystem where talent, capital, and hard-earned lessons are shared to solve real-world problems. That combination of humility, grit, and ‘we’re in this together’ ambition is why I chose to join Headversity and scale another company here.”
— Kelly Schmitt, CEO, Headversity
Cleantech, Fintech, and Agtech are key strengths of the Calgary ecosystem, supported by deep industry anchors in the energy sector, a collaborative public-private innovation network, and a strong talent pipeline. In 2025–2026, Calgary’s innovation community expanded through the access of dedicated resources through assets like the Platform Innovation Centre, and growing cross-sector partnerships driving diversification and high-growth company formation. Calgary’s Innovation Strategy, stewarded by Calgary Economic Development, has provided clear pathways, focus and alignment amongst priority sectors in building out Calgary’s innovation ecosystem.
"Calgary has been growing 4 times the other Canadian startup ecosystems, gaining 52 ranks globally since 2020, and one we constantly quote among our best-practice policy case studies. Organizations like Platform Calgary, Calgary Innovation Coalition, and Calgary Economic Development can be proud of their leading role in building Calgary as a model of how mid-sized cities can execute a winning playbook." — JF Gauthier, Founder & CEO of Startup Genome

We’re excited to introduce the inaugural cohort of the Platform Pre-Accelerator — a group of founders building solutions across healthcare, construction, transportation, agriculture, e-commerce, and more. This 9-week, in-person, execution-first program is designed for founders who have moved beyond the idea stage and are actively testing their product in-market — working to define their ideal customer, validate demand, and build a repeatable path to early traction. The cohort brings together Calgary-based founders who are building, experimenting, and working to turn early progress into structured, consistent execution.
