Platform Calgary is a non-profit, member based organization. Our mandate is to bring together the resources of Calgary's tech ecosystem to help startups launch and grow at every step of their journey, from ideation through to scale.
More about Platform CalgaryThe title "Chief Technology Officer" can mean very different things depending on who you ask—and what stage the company is in. At its core, the CTO role is one of the most flexible and dynamic positions in any organization.
In early-stage startups, CTOs often wear every technical hat imaginable—coding, setting up infrastructure, debugging customer issues, and even helping with product design. It’s a highly hands-on role that blends engineering, IT, and product responsibilities.
In contrast, CTOs at scaling or enterprise-level companies may never write a line of code. Their responsibilities shift toward high-level decision-making: managing teams, overseeing budgets, defining tech strategy, and driving executive-level initiatives.
A major part of tech leadership is navigating constant trade-offs. Should the engineering team build new features or optimize internal infrastructure? What’s the right balance between moving fast and maintaining secure, scalable systems?
Every CTO faces this tension. While test coverage and cybersecurity are essential, so is innovation and staying ahead of the market. The right path isn’t always clear—but making those calls is part of the job.
Modern CTOs must also take ownership of data strategy. Whether managing customer transactions, IoT devices, or implementing AI and machine learning, data governance and security are non-negotiable.
In the age of large language models (LLMs), data isn’t just an operational resource—it’s a strategic differentiator. CTOs must understand how to leverage data responsibly and effectively to shape the future of their companies.
Being a CTO in Calgary comes with unique challenges. The city is a growing tech hub, but it’s still emerging on the global stage. Finding senior talent and accessing capital often requires strategic thinking and creative problem-solving.
That said, Calgary has something special: a collaborative and supportive tech community. Founders, leaders, and builders here are deeply invested in each other’s success—and that’s a major asset for any CTO.
That’s why our group of Calgary-based CTOs meets monthly. In a role that’s constantly evolving, having a trusted network to share insights, challenges, and advice is invaluable.
Whether you're leading at a seed-stage startup or managing tech at a scaling company, the road is rarely smooth. But when you’re not navigating it alone, it’s a lot easier to keep moving forward.

The Peer-to-Peer Program connects individuals with same roles and responsibilities at local tech companies, providing them the space to network, problem solve, and share knowledge with one another.

For Startups
At the March Community Connect, we brought together founders and scaling sales leaders for a practical conversation on how AI is reshaping modern revenue systems.Featuring Abbas Sarraf (Co-Founder & CPO, Aimsio) and Dennis Hale (VP Sales, Aimsio), moderated by Stephen Wensley (CEO, Acuspire), the session cut through the noise and focused on what’s actually working today. And the message was clear:AI isn’t about replacing sales teams. It’s about building better sales and marketing systems for scale.

For Ecosystem Builders
Behind every startup milestone is a moment of support: a connection made, a skill learned, or guidance that helps a founder take the next step. Platform Calgary’s programming provides a tiered pathway that supports founders from the initial spark of an idea through to global scaling. By lowering barriers for early-stage entrepreneurs and providing high-performance coaching and sector-specific connections for growing companies, these programs help founders move from idea to traction and build businesses that can scale.
